Although AVG used to make a great product freely available, sadly with the newest "free" update as of April 2008 they have chosen to turn AVG antivirus into a VIRUS itself with the addition of a "feature" which randomly fires up your PC's web browser WITHOUT WARNING AND WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION taking you to AVG's website to ADVERTISE for their version 8 product suite. THIS IS UNFORGIVEABLE BEHAVIOR FOR ANY REPUTABLE DATA SECURITY SOFTWARE. AVG ANTIVIRUS IS NOW NO BETTER THAN ANY VIRUS OR SPYWARE MALICIOUS CODE. GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE THIS PROGRAM COULD ALSO BE DOING TO YOUR PC. AVOID THIS MALWARE PROGRAM AT ALL COSTS!

Another reason to upgrade to FF2.0 would be because some extensions are now only built for FF2.0. So if you really love what an extension can bring to you, then you would have to upgrade in order to obtain it's benefits.

Or you can just modify the extension to work with what version you have. But that depends on the extension itself. Some extensions take advantage of FF2.0's new interface, such as your mention of the close button on each tab. If you are modifying an extension to work with an earlier version of FF that uses that button it will look weird, because the earlier version does not make use of that button.
